Not every great road trip has to cross state lines twice. Sometimes the best family adventure is the one within easy reach — close enough to leave after school on Friday, far enough to feel like you actually went somewhere. The Delaware and Maryland Shore fits that brief perfectly.
Why Delaware & Maryland Shore?
Rehoboth Beach, Dewey Beach, Ocean City, and Assateague Island form one of the most family-friendly coastal corridors in the Mid-Atlantic. Beaches are wide, boardwalks are classic, the seafood is exceptional, and the drive from South Jersey ranges from 90 minutes to 2.5 hours depending on your destination.
Better still: Delaware has no sales tax. Outlet shopping, anyone?
Best Stops Along the Way
Rehoboth Beach, DE
The crown jewel of Delaware's shore. Rehoboth's mile-long boardwalk is lined with Thrasher's french fries (get the vinegar, not ketchup), Funland amusement park rides, and shops that have been there since your parents were kids. The beach itself is clean, wide, and calm enough for young children.
Assateague Island
Wild horses run free on this barrier island straddling the Maryland-Virginia border. They're not pets — they'll bite if you get too close — but watching a herd cross the road in front of your rental is one of those genuinely magical travel moments. Camping on the beach is available if you want to extend the trip.
Ocean City, MD
The 10-mile boardwalk, the Ferris wheel, the mini golf, the Thrasher's (yes, they have one here too) — Ocean City is unabashedly fun. Go on a Tuesday in late June to avoid peak weekend crowds.
Family Tips
- Beat the Bay Bridge. The Chesapeake Bay Bridge backs up badly on summer Fridays. Leave by 2pm or after 8pm.
- Pack the beach wagon. A collapsible wagon is more useful than any other beach accessory when you're hauling chairs, coolers, and kids' stuff from the parking lot.
- Rehoboth parking tip. The city-owned lots on Rehoboth Ave fill by 9am on summer weekends. Walk or bike from your rental accommodation instead.
- Sunscreen, sunscreen, sunscreen. Mid-Atlantic summer sun on open beach is relentless.
Vehicle Recommendation
For families, a minivan or full-size SUV from our Budget fleet makes this trip dramatically easier. You'll need room for beach gear, car seats, and the "small" amount of shopping your family will inevitably do in Rehoboth's outlets. Minivans are underrated — the sliding doors alone are worth it when you're wrangling sandy kids in a crowded parking lot.
