At 35 miles per hour, Skyline Drive is one of the slowest major roads in America. That's entirely the point. Running the full 105-mile ridge of Shenandoah National Park, it offers more than 70 overlooks, hundreds of deer, the occasional black bear, and a quality of light in the Blue Ridge Mountains that has inspired painters for two centuries. This is a drive where the road itself is the destination.
About Skyline Drive
Built during the Great Depression by the Civilian Conservation Corps, Skyline Drive runs the length of Shenandoah National Park along the crest of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Virginia. Elevations range from 600 to nearly 4,000 feet, and the ridge delivers views in both directions — Shenandoah Valley to the west, Piedmont to the east.
There are four entry points (north, central, and south), making it easy to drive a section rather than the full 105 miles. That said, the full drive in a day is entirely doable if you leave early — plan for 5–6 hours with stops, not counting hikes.
Best Overlooks
Stony Man Summit (Mile 41.7)
A short 1.6-mile round-trip hike leads to the park's second-highest peak at 4,010 feet. The views on a clear morning are staggering — layers of mountains fading into blue haze as far as you can see.
Thorofare Mountain Overlook (Mile 40.5)
One of the best roadside stops — no hiking required. Pull off, walk to the stone wall, and take in a 180-degree panorama of the Shenandoah Valley. Come at golden hour if you can.
Hogback Mountain Overlook (Mile 20.8)
In the northern section, Hogback offers sweeping views of the Shenandoah River's South Fork as it winds through the valley far below. This is one of the most photographed views in the park.
Wildlife & Trails
Shenandoah has one of the highest deer densities of any national park — you will see deer. Black bears are commonly spotted too, especially in berry season (July–September). Keep food in your trunk, not your back seat. The park has over 500 miles of trails; the most rewarding short hike is the Dark Hollow Falls trail (1.4 miles round trip to a 70-foot waterfall).
